The hall of one of Newcastle's oldest banks faces demolition. Barclays Bank have applied for permission to knock down their Grey Street banking hall and fill the space with offices. The facade of the building is to be left unchanged in Barclays latest plans. It was built by John Dobson in 1836. But the banking hall, built some 60 years later, will go for good if permission is granted. 4th February 1973 (b/w photo)

It was alleged that Mr Calvert was shot and killed at Mr Smedley's home in Wendens Ambo near Saffron Walden (21st June).
