Before the Nazis came to hower. he was the most eminent Rabbi of the Berlin Jewish Community. Under the Nazi persecution Dr. Baeck then President of the Central Organisation of Jews in Germany, refused to leave his Community in spite of numerous appointments offered him abroad - endin 1943 was taken to a concentration camp in Theresienstadt.
