Even a downpour failed to dampen the spirits of hundreds of youngsters in Newsome. They braved the rain to take part in a colourful procession to herald the start of the Newsome International Carnival at the High School. The weather forced events inside the school, but the stalls and musical attractions - include a steel band, Brass bands and Indian dancers - were very popular. The carnival's theme was international friendship - and these youngsters from Stile Common Junior School are pictured celebrating good neighbours round the world. The event ended with two dances at the school and a concert by local band Ceramic Joe. All money raised will go to a minibus adapted for use by disabled youngsters at Newsome High. 8th July 1989 (b/w photo)
