The 21 old Johanna Smith, born Brand, from Munich-Thalkirchen married the Us soldier Richard Smith on June 14th 1952 and followed him to the United States. It didn't last a long time and the first troubles between the young married couple began. Richard was very jealoous, beat his wife and let she have an intolerable life. On October 2nd Johanna Smith wrote to her mother that Richard commits an assault upon her again and again amd that she now appealed for divorce. when her mother got the letter her daughter had been already dead. she was found shot in front of the entrance of the PX at Camp Carson near Colorado Springs. Her 23 years old husband had been taken prisoner at once because it is suggested with great probability that he will be the murder. When the reporter come to Mrs.Brand to interview her the poor woman didn't suspect anything of the death of her daughter. The last news had worked more quickly. Dispaired she showed the last letter of October 2nd 1933 of her daugher to our fo ~ grafter. she told that Richard was an autocar-varnisher in civil-life and that the was proper man. ZUM4901595: Dec. 12, 1953 - Adventurous flight to the freedom: The 52 rears old baker Bedrich Cech told his adventurous flight with his families from the Czechoslovakia to Austria to representatives of the press at Vienna. Three times the luggage-van in which the fugitives had hidden themselves passed the iron curtain before the family finally reached the freedom. Cech and his 30 years old son had made a hole under the wood loaded wagon which got air by oxygen-apparatus. At this hiding-place the two men, the daughter in law of Cech and their two children lived more than one week. Half stifled and starved they reached the American zone of Austria. The reason for their flight had been the fear being arrested because the daughter of the baker married an American and emigrated to the United States. ZUM4900296: Dec. 12, 1953 - Russian shoot Mother and son family travelling from East to West Berlin.: Russian troops on Sunday night killed Joachim Wozniak (16) and seriously wounded his mother in the thight they fired on the van in which the family was travelling from the Autobabn checkpoint at Babelsberg in teh East Zone to West Berlin Police post on the intersector frontier. West Berlin police, to whom the father run for assistance, were not permitted by the Russians to cross the frontier to give medical help. People's Police later allowed Wozniak to drive the vehicle back to their post at Babelzberg. No medical help was available there. After further delay he was allowed to drive the vehicle into West Berlin. By this time his son had died and his wife was seriously ill from loss of blood.
