Biography
Maria Vittoria Backhaus, photographer and reporter of interiors, still life, fashion, food, and nature, studied set design at the Brera Academy in Milan. Her work combined rigorous professionalism with a distinctive creative vision. Her images are both records of reality and, paradoxically, acts of invention, carefully conceived, researched, and staged rather than improvised. This is why her photographs retain such a striking freshness: they feel timeless, as if they might have been taken yesterday or tomorrow. Her work appeared in leading fashion and design magazines, and she created numerous advertising campaigns and catalogues. Backhaus lived and worked in Milan until her death in 2025.
